Getting acquainted with the Man, choosing the type of traffic and commencing work

A week ago we launched an experiment where one of our colleagues will learn how to run traffic and try to become a top affiliate in real time. First of all, we reached out to our community and asked to help us choose the traffic type the Man should start working with. Now let’s finally meet the Man in person (his life story is really cool) and then get to work. Oleg, we give the floor to you.

Hi there! I’m the Man, but you can call me Oleg. I’m 41 years of age. I’m married and have four daughters. My fifth daughter will be born very soon. I have been involved in SEO optimization for the last 12 years.

My journey to becoming an Internet specialist was actually a long one. I have tried a host of offline jobs and professions. I have a degree in military radio engineering, which may seem rather close to the Internet, but back then I had to study computer technologies virtually in the literal sense of the word: a lecturer drew a monitor, keyboard and system unit with wires on a chalkboard, and then we just wrote command codes in the Fortran language. Funny-not funny.

I served in the army for 10 years, and it was an unforgettable experience. Everybody seemed to be soaking themselves in alcohol. The rule was simple: you don’t earn money, you get it. We were happy about that.

Job, piracy, SEO, and bribes to cops

However, I reached a point when I got fed up with all that and retired. I lost interest in excessive drinking, as it was slowly but surely engulfing me up.

I started looking for a job. The experience I gained while serving in the armed forces was of no interest whatsoever to employers. I was primarily offered a manager’s job with the minimum basic salary. Eventually, I was hired as an engineer by a security company. Then I worked at other companies as an engineer, manager, brand manager and so on. I wasn’t particularly satisfied with that. I wanted more. I didn’t want to be dependent on heads and CEOs and waste my time on commuting to the office. The only thing that came into my mind was finding an Internet job. But how? What shall I do?

My first true Internet activity was selling pirated DVDs. I downloaded movies on the Internet, recorded them on blank disks and sold DVDs in bundles. Once I was detained by the police, handcuffed and brought to the station. I had to bribe the officers with $3,000. When I was released, I opened an online store and once again started selling DVDs. However, I was just boozing away all the money I earned before this all ended (the DVD era was drawing to a close).

I started looking for a job and got a position at a web studio. It turned out to be rather easy, and soon I realized that it’s better to work directly with clients.

This is how I got involved in SEO optimization. At that time it was rather straightforward, many things that now are inefficient worked well back then, links and optimization yielded good results. Soon I established my own client base and my life took a decisive turn for the better. But, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end — Yandex introduced an update — all the organic traffic was relocated to the second page of search results.

A journey to affiliate marketing

I was surfing one of the forums and came across a thread on affiliate marketing and networks. I had never dealt with something like that before. I quickly got hooked. The good news was that you could work from all corners of the globe.

Having studied the subject for a while, I realized that traffic arbitrage is something that really worked and I decided to figure out how traffic is run, whatever it takes.

By some quirk of fortune, I got employed by ZorbasMedia. I have repeatedly and persistently asked the team to help me start a career in affiliate marketing. Finally, the guys and I decided to launch this project where I’m going to learn how to run traffic and share everything with you. I’m sure that there are quite a few men like me. I’m very excited and looking forward to fruitful labor.

I have absolutely no experience in affiliate marketing, but I have you, my dear readers, and I hope that you will lend me a helping hand. Let’s do it together. Are you with me? You can always contact me on Telegram: @thoparit.

Yours faithfully,
the Man

So, Oleg has introduced himself and now we can move on to practice. Last week ZorbasMedia team and our community voted that push notifications are the best traffic type to start an affiliate career (it didn’t come as a surprise).

Let’s move on to work. Traffic won’t convert on its own. What are we going to do? Oleg will choose, buy and set up a tracker and start studying all the available information on push traffic: theory, cases, webinars and everything he will be able to find. Next Thursday he will submit a report and we will assess whether he has enough knowledge to start running push traffic. ZorbasMedia will provide Oleg with all the resources needed to purchase the initial infrastructure.

Now let’s help Oleg to choose a vertical. In your opinion, what vertical, what type of offers is the best choice to start working with push notifications? Bear in mind that Oleg has zero experience in affiliate marketing.

That’s it for today. Next week we will choose a vertical, assess Oleg’s findings and start driving traffic. Stay with us, guys, and don’t forget to share your thoughts and ideas in the comment section.
